Residents have spoken of their shock about the death of a South Yorkshire toddler who was found face down in the bath.

An inquest has been opened to try and establish how tragic Summer Shaw died aged just four.

Neighbours close to the family home in Chaucer Road, Mexborough, near Rotherham, said they were devastaed.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “It is shocking.

“It is a terrible thing to happen, especially at this time of the year.”

Another woman who wanted to remain anonymous added: “I can’t think what her parents are going through.”

Doncaster Coroners Court was yesterday told emergency services staff rushed to the family home on December 6 after Summer was found face down in the bath.

Paramedics tried to revive her at the scene and she was taken to hospital but died later that day.

The inquest was adjourned and is due to resume in Doncaster next May.

Her parents were named at the hearing as shop worker Nicole Carr and Carl Shaw who works in a call centre.

Her funeral has not yet taken place.
