GLAD to be gay - and here to stay. Thousands flocked to the fourth Doncaster Pride event - proving its status as the fastest growing festival of its kind in the UK.

Visitors flocked to the gathering from across the north, and the 2010 party was held at Doncaster Racecourse to make sure there was room for everyone.

Chairman Trevor Jones said Doncaster was now one of the biggest gay pride events in the country - and was becoming widely acknowledged by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as one of the highlights of the calendar.

"It is a celebration for our community, their families, friends and supporters - but it is also much more than that," he said.

"Pride is about inclusion, it's about everyone feeling welcome to come along and join the party - no matter what their age, race or sexuality.

"Everyone has come to Doncaster to join in the best party of the year," he said.

The 12-hour event began with a Walk of Unity from Elmfield Park to the racecourse and ended with an aftershow party hosted by Sheffield-based club sensations Climax.

In between came a seven hour stage show featuring Kelly Llorenna, Adam Rickitt, Liz McClarnon, S Club, Toyah Wilcox and many more.

An indoor acoustic stage featured a wealth of local performers, while other highlights included dance demonstrations, fashion shows and a civil partnership event.

The day also took in a market, fun fair, a children's area and displays by the emergency services.

Funding for the event came from different groups including local businesses, charitable organisations and donations from the public - though this year there was a small entrance fee to secure Pride's future for next year.

Trevor added: "Pride events are about reinforcing messages of equality, and we are saying that today in 2010 we should not judge people based on their sexuality. That's what we were celebrating."
