Two friends who are planning to climb Africa’s highest mountain in four weeks time have smashed their fundraising target and have now set a new total.

Hayley Mayes, 35, of Partridge Road in Barnby Dun, and Claire Southern, 32, of Green Lane in Scawthorpe, are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The duo chose to support the charity as a thank you for the care staff provided to a child of a friend who died at the Dinnington-based facility in 2009.

The two workmates have to date raised £14,592, smashing their £10,000 target but are now hoping to reach a massive £15,000.

Mrs Mayes, a business manager at the St Sepulchre Gate branch of the Halifax bank, said: “We have been amazed by how much support we have received and we hope it continues.”

She said that the pair had been busy getting their kits ready and undertaking lots of long walks and altitude training in preparation for jetting out on September 17.
