Phill Cortes and Dom Hogan, both IT specialists with the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, will drive from Leeds to the Algarve, Portugal, with two other friends next month.

But the ride should be interesting to say the least, as they will do it in a 15-year-old red Suzuki car which cost a mere £200, and was picked up as a sale from E-bay.

The challenge they are undertaking is one they came up with in a bid to raise cash for Phill’s 32-year-old friend Helen Nutter, a mum who has a two-year-old son, Louie, and has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

All the money raised from sponsorship towards their journey will go towards helping with Helen’s care, and funds to help her young family.

The group have created their own 24-hour race on June 27 and will drive non-stop for 1,700 miles. If they don’t finish in the allocated time they will have forfeits to do, which will be aired via Facebook Live.

Phill, who works from Doncaster with Dom, said: “We wanted to help Helen and designed this unique fund-raising opportunity.

“Twenty-four hours non-stop will be tough – but we’re doing it knowing that the money we will raise will help our friend who is in our thoughts.”
