A Doncaster medic is set to discover if his boots really are made for walking when he sets off on a marathon trek later this year.
Kris Watson, a community psychiatric nurse team leader for Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, will undertake a gruelling UK coast-to-coast walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
He will walk from near Whitehaven on the west coast of Britain to picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay on the east covering a distance of 192 miles.
And he’s busy making preparations for the journey which will take him away from his wife Jenny who he only married a couple of months ago.
He said: “Being away from home will be the hardest part - there will be times on the walk I will be in complete isolation with no human contact and that’s going to be difficult.
“But my wife has been making detailed plans - she knows where I am going to be each day, where she can get hold of me, where I will be staying - so I think I should be OK,” he laughed.
The walk will take Kris, 40, of Bawtry, through three national parks – Cumbria, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
He will camp at night and hopes to complete the challenge in 12 days.
Kris said: “I’ve always been very active and love scrambling up mountains and scuba diving, I’m an outdoor type of person.
“I have been preparing over the last few weeks, going on weekend expeditions in the areas I’ll be walking in to get used to camping and the terrain. The Dales and the Lakes are familiar stomping ground to me and I am looking forward to getting going.
“I have always wanted to do a long walk like this and after getting married and reaching 40, I decided it was now or never.”
His efforts will be in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, chosen because of his job.
“Because of the job I do in older people’s mental health, where around 70 per cent of the patients have dementia, I decided to do this walk and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
“Not only will it raise money for a good cause, it will also raise awareness of the condition,” he added.
Kris sets off on August 17.
