A remarkable fundraising pensioner has collected a staggering £52,000 for a cancer charity in memory of his wife.

Acker Shaw, aged 66, from Rossington, has been raising money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity since his wife Brenda lost her battle with the illness in 2000.

Up until her death, Brenda was receiving treatment at the Sheffield hospital for breast cancer.

After she died, Acker vowed to raise as much money as possible, setting himself a goal of £52,000, which he has now almost achieved.

Father-of two Acker, who met wife at the age of 15, said: “When I lost Brenda 15 years ago I knew that I needed to keep her memory alive by giving something back to the place that had treated her so exceptionally well during her final months.

“Back then, I never imagined that I would get close to reaching the £50,000 mark and it’s all thanks to the generosity of local people and companies that I have raised such a large amount for the cancer charity.

“There are too many people to thank individually for their contributions.

“But I am overwhelmed by the level of continued support I receive from people within the community – some of whom had never even met Brenda.

“If this money helps others faced with the reality of a cancer diagnosis then I know that Brenda would be incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved.”

Acker, who was an Olympic torch bearer in 2012, has raised the money by holding a variety of activities, including football club collections and local community events.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for Weston Park Hospital and supports research to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

The hospital provides cancer treatment services for patients across the region which means that patients from Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Worksop, Chesterfield, and beyond benefit from donations made to the charity.
