Don't tar us all with same brush
ANYONE familiar with the daily post bag to this newspaper will know just how fed up are the people of Sheffield with the plethora of speed bumps littering the city's streets.
Uncomfortable, distracting and unnecessary are among the most often cited comments about the measures adopted which are seen as a way of driving motorists off the roads rather than dealing with excessive speed.
But now the city council is finally looking at a selection of alternatives which conceivably could encourage more consideration from motorists without turning our roads into obstacle courses for everyone...and earning so much discontent with those responsible for installing them.
This would be welcomed by the vast majority of drivers who are fed up of being tarred with the same brush of irresponsibility as the small number of bad and dangerous motorists. They are also deeply unhappy at being forced to suffer the uncomfortable consequences.
But any attempts to make the roads safer must be accompanied by education packages for everyone - and that includes pedestrians of all ages, who must accept their share of responsibility for their actions.
Councils must get basic services right
SUGGESTIONS that fewer than four out of 10 people in South Yorkshire are unhappy with the services they receive from their local councils gives important food for thought.
While there are some positive results from the widesweeping Government survey, such as the disclosure that 83 per cent of Sheffield's pensioners indicate that they are satisfied with their home and neighbourhood, the overall outcome gives the impression that the public feel their local councils could do a lot better.
And it does not take a rocket scientist to show why this could be the case. The public simply want reliable and efficient basic services.
Once local councils get their jobs right at that level, then the public would be a lot more forgiving and even supportive of a modern council's wider role in the community.
