It was depressing to read that Doncaster came second in a list of local authorities with the highest proportion of overweight or obese residents at 74.4 per cent.
It is a growing problem affecting the whole country and which threatens our already beleaguered health service.
Ingredients have come together – cheap convenience foods, alcohol, lack of exercise, a too powerful food industry lobby – a recipe for disaster.
Clearly urgent measures are needed but these must take the form of education, increased affordable leisure facilities and how about a return to domestic science in schools? Good habits start young.
But people should not be bullied or nannied into lifestyle decisions. They need to be better informed, not have government ban doughnuts, pasties and fizzy drinks.
