Cybermen, Scarecrows, Ood, Silurian and Clockwork Robots materialised in front of surprised shoppers near the fountains outside the Town Hall.

And it doesn't stop there.

This lot was just the advance mission. Next, the Daleks are coming!

The TV creatures are all part of a unique new Doctor Who Live stage show, which arrives at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on October 12 and 13.

Based on the smash hit BBC TV series, bosses promise a spectacular audio-visual experience with live music, special effects and specially filmed new scenes.

Matt Smith will only appear in specially filmed sequences to be shown on a giant screen.

Nigel Planer, who played long-haired hippy Neil in The Young Ones, will appear live as a Vorgenson, an 'inter-galactic showman' and the doctor's biggest fan. The show will follow him on an inter-galactic journey from wartime London - concluding with an epic on-stage battle .

Stage manager David McEvoy, aged 45, who brought the creatures to the Peace Gardens, joked: "It's nice and peaceful with a lot of people around - the monsters can cause a lot of trouble here. They'll certainly be doing that at the Arena.

"I remember as a kid watching Doctor Who from behind the sofa. It's scary but exciting and suitable for all ages."

Actress Jenny Phillips, 30, is the pretty face behind lots of the terrifying monsters - playing a Silurian, Weeping Angel, Vampire and a Clockwork Robot. She's even one of the Daleks in the stage show.

She admitted: "As a little girl I was petrified watching Doctor Who. But it's amazing to now be playing the monsters. My friends are so jealous."

Millions of Doctor Who fans will have seen actor Karl Greenwood on television - but few would recognise him. He has played many of the monsters and will be bringing them to life on stage, as a Cyberman, Ood and Scarecrow.

Karl, 42, who stepped into the Cyberman outfit in the Peace Gardens, told The Star: "The Cybermen are my favourite Doctor Who monster. In costume you become the character. You take on this persona and your posture changes."

Tickets for the Sheffield shows are 38.50, 34.50 and 25 from the Arena Box Office, call 0114 256 5656, buy online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or www.arenaticketshop.co.uk
