Thankfully Liberal Democrat and Labour peers along with others in the House of Lords realised the injustice of cutting Tax Credits for low-paid workers.
This issue affects many families in the Rotherham area who will lose on average £1,300 each year.
As Liberal Democrats we pledge to fight any future attempts to impose these cuts, which affect our local families so significantly.
Ms J Middleton, secretary of Rotherham and Barnsley Liberal Democrats said, “Since replacing the Coalition in May, the Conservatives have announced that £12 billion of benefit cuts will go ahead.”
When we were part of the coalition Government, Liberal Democrats refused to allow benefit cuts of this scale to go ahead.
Now that the Conservatives have a small majority and the coalition has ended, the protection enjoyed by those most in need from the worst excesses of Conservative cuts has gone.
The Conservatives feel free to make the poorest bear the heaviest burden. The Liberal Democrats continue to argue that those with the broadest shoulders, the wealthiest people, should carry a greater share of the costs of ending the deficit.
The Conservatives have gone in the opposite direction.
