A ROTHERHAM MP has hit out at new unemployment figures which he says show Government cuts are ‘hurting but not working’.
Denis MacShane said the statistics painted a ‘dismal’ picture of the town - with 10.5 per cent of its economically active population claiming Jobseekers Allowances.
Claimants aged 18 to 24 have also risen to double the national average.
Mr MacShane added: “This sorry state of affairs cannot be allowed to carry on.
“This Government’s extreme austerity measures are punishing the north and can be felt particularly strongly here in South Yorkshire.”
He added: “As these figures prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, it’s hurting but it’s not working.”
