Digging deep to remember Miners' Strike
MEMORIES of the Miners' Strike will be remembered 25 years on at a series of events in Barnsley on Saturday.
Miners past and present, and their families and friends from around the country, are invited to mark the anniversary with the Yorkshire branch of the National Union of Mineworkers.
A free open day and exhibition will be staged at the Miners' Offices in Huddersfield Road, Barnsley, followed by a second exhibition in Barnsley Civic Hall, and a 'Heroes Within' celebration at Gawber Road WMC in the evening.
Chris Skidmore, chairman of the Yorkshire branch of the NUM, said: "These events have been organised to remember a period in time which many communities will never forget, and to share with younger generations the struggles many ordinary working families were faced with.
"We never want people to forget what the Miners' Strike was about. These events will allow those who lived through the strike to reminisce commemorate and celebrate.
"We also hope the events will provide an opportunity to bring long lost friends together again."
The Miners' Offices exhibitionruns from 10.30am to 3pm, while the Civic Hall display runs from 11am to 4pm.
In the evening, Gawber Road WMC will opens its doors from 7pm for a film about the strike, tunes from singers Coast, a buffet and a bar. Tickets are 2 on the door.

Steel Valley Beacon Arts is giving two performances of Old King Coal.
One is at the request of the Trades Union Congress, after a member heard a song from the show at a recent community event in Stocksbridge. It will take place at Wortley Hall, on Saturday July 4.
The second will be at The Venue, Stocksbridge, on Friday July 17.
The play, written by Steel Valley Beacon Arts' member Peter Fearnley, is set in an imaginary village and tells of the pressures on, and divisions caused in, a family where two sons-in-law are on different sides.
Tickets are still available for both performances by calling The Venue on 0114 283 8692 or Wortley Hall 0114 288 2100.
