A Derbyshire woman has succeeded on spending just on £1 a day on food and drink to raise awareness of poverty.
Sue Wyatt, of Calver, took part in the Live Below The Line challenge, which saw her living on a £1 daily budget for five days.
Sue, a member of Bakewell’s Oxfam fundraising group, found the afternoons the hardest when her energy levels dropped.
She said: “I realised how much social activity revolves around food and how this can be limited when you have very little money. I was also struck by the lack of spontaneity at mealtimes; I ate very similar foods and couldn’t afford a wide variety of food.”
“Since signing up for the challenge, I have been amazed by the amount of discussion it has raised. Live Below the Line, as well as being a way of raising funds for charities tackling poverty, is a way of raising awareness of such an important issue.”
She added: “Having told people about the challenge, it’s raised many questions. Some people have said it sounded easy until they really thought about how small an amount of money £1 is.”
Sue, who took part alongside her daughter and son-in-law, raised money for Oxfam.
