DERBYSHIRE residents are being warned to steer clear of paying companies offering to help reduce their council tax bills – because they can check their banding themselves free of charge.
Derbyshire County Council has issued the warning after trading standards officers reported a rise in complaints.
Some residents have received letters saying their home is in a higher council tax band than it should be - and rogue firms are offering to get the banding reclassified and give the householder cash they’ve overpaid, for a fee.
Coun Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for Regeneration, said: “There is absolutely no reason for any Derbyshire resident to pay for this service.”
Anyone who wants to check their council tax banding free of charge can call the Valuation Office Agency on 0300 050 3600.
