Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg got the chance to see Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre apprentices at work when he attended the launch of the new AMRC Training Centre.
Among those he met was 17-year-old Charlie Rowlinson from Chapeltown, who has just completed a year with the AMRC and hopes to go on to gain an HNC and a university degree.
“I hadn’t thought about engineering, but I heard about the job here and thought I would apply for it,” said Charlie.
“I wanted to do A Levels, but the prospect of earning some money, while learning and doing something with my hands – something that was different to being in a classroom all the time – was attractive.
“I thought that if I didn’t like it, I could always go and do something different, but I am really enjoying it. Every day brings a different challenge.”
