A deer had to put down by police firearms officers after it was hit by a vehicle on the M1 in Derbyshire.

The animal was struck at junction 29 (Chesterfield) of the motorway at about 9.50am on Sunday.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “It was very badly injured in the fast lane and couldn’t move.

“We attended and stopped traffic. We were unable to contact a vet and unfortunately our firearms officers had to put the deer down and remove it from the motorway.”
