CAMPAIGNERS are holding a ceremony to mark a Sheffield playing fields’ new protected status under a scheme to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The Woodhouse Mill fields, off Retford Road, were threatened by plans for a £12.7m new link road to the Waverley housing development at Orgreave.
But they have now been declared the Queen Elizabeth II Fields, under a national scheme to protect green spaces.
The dedication ceremony is on Saturday, June 23, from noon. Members of the Woodhouse Mill community group who campaigned to save the fields, including Derek Hutchinson and former Sheffield Steelers player Gavin Farrand, will gather with civic dignitaries and local councillors for the event.
