Decision leaves sour aftertaste
THE reaction of the two camps most directly affected by the so-called merger of Myers Grove and Wisewood schools indicates the major flaw in the proposal. This is not a merger at all. It is the closure of Wisewood and the rebuilding of Myers Grove.
The equal messages of disappointment and jubilation shows that this distinction is not lost on parents with those associated with Myers Grove celebrating yesterday's controversial U-turn by the city council, while those linked to Wisewood are planning to seek a judicial review.
No matter how officials and politicians try to paper over the gaping cracks of their arguments, they cannot escape the fact that this decision means one community (Wisewood) must sacrifice so much while a neighbouring community (Myers Grove) will gain so much.
The fact that this has been achieved by a council reversing its own decision taken just six weeks ago will leave the recriminations and, worse, a dented faith in the democratic process, hovering for years to come.
City owes debt of gratitude to Pauline
THERE can be few retirement gifts which are as appropriate as that enjoyed by Pauline Eveleigh who has stepped down as director of Sheffield's Chidlren's Festival after 15 years. To mark the occasion she stood on the stage of the Crucible Theatre before an audience of festival participants and supporters to be cheered to the rafters.
Pauline's legacy is that she has brought pleasure and fulfilment to thousands of children who have taken part in the festival and the city owes her a huge debt of gratitude.
Haggling at home
WHO said Britons are out of their depth when they step into a foreign market and are expected to get involved in a spot of bartering? For a survey out today shows that we save a very welcome 3.5 billion a year by haggling while on holiday. That is to say we knock the price down by a tidy 23 per cent on average. Pity we don't bring those skills home to try in Sainsbury's.
