Decision due on Sheffield pizza firm’s 5am plans

A bid by the owners of a pizza takeway to open until 5am has been objected to by residents who fear it will increase noise and litter.

Papa John’s, on Ecclesall Road, wants to extend its closing time from 11.30pm seven days a week. A decision will be made by Sheffield Council today.

A letter of objection from Broomhill Park Association told councillors: “The longer the opening hours, the greater the nuisance.

“Having fast food outlets open until 5am effectively prolongs noise and, therefore, disturbed sleep, until the time early commuters are beginning to park in our area.

“On the health grounds of sleep deprivation alone, we would beg you not to allow any more late opening on Ecclesall Road.”

Other residents said there was a ‘gradual erosion’ in the quality of life for residents because there are so many establishments in a residential area.

Streets and gardens are often ‘littered with food packaging’.

Green councillor Brian Webster pointed out that plans for another takeaway nearby to extend its hours were refused on noise grounds.

Papa John’s has said 70 per cent of its trade is through deliveries, and it has a CCTV system to combat crime and disorder.
