On Tuesday councillors will decide whether or not to approve DLP Planning’s application to build a 972-bed student housing and shop complex on the site of former the Footprint Tools factory fronting Garden Street, Hollis Croft and White Croft.

According to a report to councillors the ‘comprehensive’ redevelopment is broken down into three smaller sites.

A north-south public path will be included within the development, which the report says will improve links which are ‘currently lacking’ withroads and movement being in an east-west direction along ‘steeply sloping’ streets.

The report adds: ‘The public link will vastly improve the permeability of the area and is a very positive aspect of the scheme, particularly in light of the wider regeneration taking place in the area.’

Council offices have recommended the plans be approved.

An application to build more flats and turn the nearby St Vincent’s Church into a teaching hub was submitted this week.
