BENEFIT cheats could be caught out in Rotherham when a new national data-matching exercise is carried out this autumn.
The ‘National Fraud Initiative’ is run once every two years by the Audit Commission and requires local authorities, police and fire authorities to download and share different sets of information and data.
It is then cross-matched to identify fraud or overpayments. Local authorities will receive the results and any data matches in January.
Coun Jahangir Akhtar, deputy leader of Rotherham Council, said: “Such schemes do have a positive effect on benefit fraudsters.”
