TEENAGE swimmer Daniel Marples is taking school to the pool – teaching youngsters at the baths where he learned to swim.
Daniel, aged 15, from Ecclesfield, has been making a splash in Hillsborough Leisure Centre’s pool since he was six months.
He now trains five nights a week in City of Sheffield Swim Squad’s Junior Development Squad at Ponds Forge but goes back to Hillsborough on his day off to volunteer at sister Kelly’s lessons.
Daniel gives demonstrations of swimming strokes as well as one-on-one tuition. And, although he’s never enjoyed other sports, the Ecclesfield School pupil is now considering a career as a PE teacher or a swimming instructor.
Mum Caroline said: “Because the swimming instructors have been with him for so many years they know his ability.
“He was waiting once while his sister was having lessons and the instructors asked if he could demonstrate some swimming strokes to the younger ones. Eighteen months later and he’s still there every week!
“Hillsborough is like a second home for Daniel and Kelly. We’ve been going every week for 15 years.”
Centre manager Richard Apps said: “Daniel is a much-loved lad at the centre who motivates the youngsters as well as demonstrating great leadership skills.
“All the children and staff like him and we’re very lucky to have an extra pair of hands to develop the youngsters’ swimming capabilities.”
