A SOUTH Yorkshire politician rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in – to work as a volunteer at a charity shop.
Dan Jarvis, Labour MP for Barnsley Central, lent a hand at the Cancer Research UK store, on Market Street, in the town, to encourage people to help out ahead of National Volunteers’ Week, from June 1.
He was joined by regular shop volunteers including Alasdair Ashford, 23, of Penistone.
Mr Jarvis, who steam-cleaned clothes and worked the till, said: “I was delighted to support my local Cancer Research UK shop and find out more about the hard work behind the scenes. I’ve been lucky to have an experienced volunteer like Alasdair to show me the ropes.
“It’s inspirational to meet volunteers such as Alasdair who give up their time to contribute to the smooth running of this busy shop.”
