A COUPLE of butchers from Tickhill proved they’ve got some of the best products in the region.

D J Fenton and Eatons Butchers were crowned Category Champions at the BPEX Butcher Roadshow event at the Newark Showground.

The Young Sausage Maker award went to 18-year-old Dan Clarke from Eatons, whose pork and pepper sausage really impressed the judges.

Dan, who has been with Eatons Butchers for two years, said: “I’m really pleased. I’ve taken part once before and got a gold award, so to go a step further and win the category this time is great.

“We’ve been making this particular sausage in the shop for a while and it is popular with customers. There is no real secret, it uses quality ingredients and I make it exactly as I was taught to by Paul Eaton.”

D J Fenton picked up three titles and six gold awards, including one for Young Sausage Maker Rob Inman, and a silver award. But the icing on the cake was three champion awards: Speciality Pork Champion with a Mediterranean sausage; Lamb or Beef Champion with beef and Guinness Sausage; and Speciality Hot Eating Pie Champion with steak, ale and mushroom pie.

Carl Fenton said: “Everyone at the shop is involved in coming up with ideas and creating new products, so when we get such positive recognition it is a real boost for the whole team.”
