Dads’ group under threat due to council funding cuts

A support group helping fathers in inner-city Sheffield faces closure as part of cuts to children’s centres totalling £6.8 million.

Ben Rose, secretary to men’s family breakdown support group Men at Work, said Sharrow SureStart’s Dads’ Group has been ‘innovative and successful, bringing much- needed healthy and educative activities to fathers and children’.

He added: “Considering the group is held for two hours per week, I fail to see how significant a saving Sheffield Council will make.”

A Sheffield Council spokeswoman said: “As part of the early years review we put out to tender the support services to families within children centre areas. “

She added: “Unfortunately, the successful applicant for the tender withdrew and therefore the council has stepped in to ensure vulnerable families will continue to receive support.

“We have had meetings with this group – and are hopeful that a way can be found to keep it running.”
