A SHEFFIELD dad has hit out at a utility company after raw sewage was left in flooded gardens for three days when a deliberate blockage caused a drain to back up.

Angry dad Wayne Billard said he was ‘disgusted’ stinking sludge was still in his garden and two others at Monteney Road, Ecclesfield, after it streamed out of a drain at a nearby house on Tuesday morning.

Yorkshire Water removed a blockage it said was caused by ‘deliberately placed asphalt’ from a local sewer and dosed affected areas with disinfectant.

But the company said it could not complete a full clean-up because doing so when lawns were covered with rainwater may have caused more damage.

A full clean-up was due to take place yesterday.

Mr Billard, aged 31, said: “The drains had been smelling for days and at 8am on Tuesday we realised it had started to seep into my garden.

“Yorkshire Water just swept it all off the path, it’s still all over the garden and steps.

“It’s disgusting and it’s not right. I’ve still got raw sewage smelling in my garden.

“I’ve got a four-month- old baby and I can’t even take the dog out because he’ll trail it all back in.”

Yorkshire Water reminded people of the dangers of items getting into sewers.

A spokesman added: “Any external sewer flooding is obviously a deeply unpleasant experience for anyone to suffer and we’re working closely with customers affected to help restore everything back to normal.

“A team went out on Tuesday to tidy up any debris and returned yesterday.

“We’d like to once again remind customers in the area of items getting into sewers which don’t belong there.

“This is a very unpleasant example of just what can happen.”
