A DAD who went on holiday and brought back a flick knife as a present for his six-year-old son is today behind bars.
Father-of-four Frederick Ayres, aged 28, of Bloemfontein Street, Cudworth, Barnsley, was sentenced to 30 months’ jail after stepping off a plane at Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster with a cache of illegal weapons hidden in his luggage.
A judge at Doncaster Crown Court expressed her disbelief anyone would want to give a child such a present.
UK Border Agency officers stopped Ayres as he tried to pass through customs last October after a flight from Bulgaria.
A pepper spray canister, two flick knives, a knuckle duster, a swordstick and an extendable baton were all found in his bag.
Ayres pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and to possessing a firearm.
