Cycling series to celebrate cityscape

A new cycling event, which aims to highlight and celebrate some of Sheffield's most iconic sites, is coming to the city.

Sheffield Urban CX will see riders tackle new courses laid out around Sheffield, in celebration of its emerging status as ‘The Outdoor City.’

A spokesman for Urban CX said: “Sheffield is home to some of the best riding in the UK, with a unique cityscape that creates a fantastic place where you can be in the urban sprawl, then 15 minutes later in a greenspace, park or the majestic Peak District.

“Urban CX is a race format that ‘re-imagines’ spaces in the city and turns them into an arena for riders to test their skills on courses that will incorporate different features to make it a race to remember. The sites we have selected are at the heart of a renaissance that is seeing new industries emerge and start to thrive alongside the longstanding ones that have been there for many years.

“The aspiration of Sheffield Urban CX is to become a series of races over five years that run in the same location. Every year the area will feel different and the riders will become part of the story of regeneration of the sites. The races will also highlight the city’s growing status of being ‘The Outdoor City,’ a destination for lovers of the outdoors and a green oasis for it’s residents.”

The races will be run in sprint rounds where up to 12 riders will battle for a top six placing, to get through to the final round. The first race event will be held at Kelham Island Museum on May 6.

“The first course will be set around Kelham Island and takes many gripping twists and turns. Riders will be pitted against each other over a heart-racing course that includes cobbles, climbs and some other surprises thrown in.”
