Valerie Bayliss put out an appeal in the Sheffield Star, September 30, asking if anyone knew of the whereabouts of the old Crimean war memorial’?
Major parts of the monument were lost due to it having been moved to various sites over many years.
I replied to her appeal saying that I may know where these major parts may be but at the time I was unsure if the parts of the monument that I knew of were from the old Crimean war memorial.
The Star replied on October 2, and published a picture of the monument and I can confirm without any shadow of doubt that this is the monument that is stored at the Staniforth Road depot.
It would be interesting to know if or what is planned for the monument and if not, perhaps it may be sited somewhere around the new development of the old market and Sheffield castle area.
