A YOUNG mum was stabbed to death on a quiet Sheffield housing estate - and a man was arrested before being rushed to hospital with a life-threatening single stab wound to the heart.
Police said the 31-year-old woman - named by locals as mother-of-two Dawn Backhouse - sustained serious stab injuries and died on the way to hospital.
Dawn’s two young daughters - one aged just three, and the other aged nine or 10 - were in the house when police arrived at 12.30am, neighbours said.
Police also discovered a 44-year-old man inside the house on Langsett Grove, near Langsett Road, Walkley.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder before being taken to hospital, where he remained in a life-threatening condition last night.
Detectives confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Neighbours said Dawn had been seeing a boyfriend after separating from her husband last year. Her devastated ex-husband arrived at the house to collect the girls yesterday morning, one man said.
Forensics officers in white suits were at the property from the early hours and remained at the scene until the afternoon, while detectives quizzed visitors to the street and neighbours door-to-door.
Langsett Grove and alleyways leading off it remained cordoned off yesterday, with police officers standing guard outside the terraced house and on each corner.
One neighbour said: “She was a smashing lass with two lovely little girls. It’s a terrible, terrible thing to happen.
“I’ve lived here 12 years and it is a really nice, quiet area. I can’t believe anything like this would happen here.”
He said Dawn had started a new relationship with a man after she split from her husband, but said the boyfriend had moved out and back in again repeatedly.
Dawn had recently told neighbours she had decided to move away.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Detectives have launched an investigation into the death of a woman in the Walkley area of Sheffield.
“Emergency services were called to an address on Langsett Grove at 12.30am.
“When officers arrived they found a 31-year-old woman with serious stab injuries. She sadly died en route to hospital.
“Officers also found a 44-year-old man with a single stab wound to his chest.
“The man was conveyed to hospital where he remains. His condition is described as life-threatening.
“The man was arrested. Extensive police inquiries are taking place at the scene as officers begin to investigate the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.”
A post-mortem examination took place yesterday afternoon at Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre.
Residents of the Langsett estate were yesterday shocked by the tragedy in their quiet, leafy area which is populated mainly by pensioners.
One woman said: “I moved here a few months ago and it’s the best place I have lived in Sheffield. It is very calm, there never seems to be any trouble, and everyone is friendly.”
David Smith, 51, of Langsett Close, said: “For most of these houses you have to be over 40 to be eligible to live here, so most people are elderly - I’m one of the youngest.
“It’s a very friendly place, so this is a big shock.
“There were police here very early - about six vans, 12 police cars - and they were out taking pictures of the scene. It’s a big, big shock. Nobody is telling us anything about what has happened.”
Another woman said: “We don’t have a clue what has happened, but the police have been round asking.”
