In a new book, Yorkshire Ripper: Secret Murders, former police intelligence officer Chris Clark and journalist Tim Tate claim he may be responsible for other unsolved murders, including the death of Wendy Sewell, who was stripped and battered in a church yard in Bakewell.

The authors claim it bears the hallmarks of a Ripper murder.

Stephen Downing spent 27 years behind bars before his conviction was quashed.

But a Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “There is no evidence to connect Peter Sutcliffe with the murder of Wendy Sewell.

“The murder was thoroughly re-investigated in 2002 after the conviction of Stephen Downing was quashed.”
