A battered and bruised shopkeeper is undergoing surgery today after being attacked in broad daylight outside his Sheffield store.
Father-of-two Muhammad Rizwan, aged 44, who has run his shop in Handsworth for 13 years, was attacked from behind and his right cheekbone fractured in three places.
He was set upon close to the Supershop News store in Handsworth Road which he runs with his wife, Nabeela.
The thugs fled without stealing any valuables or shop takings.
Muhammad was being operated on today at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where surgeons hope to reset his cheekbone.
He had been involved in an argument with a man who is banned from the shop, who came into the store shortly before it shut for the day.
When Muhammad closed the shop and was walking towards his car, he was confronted by the man again.
Nabeela said that, as Muhammad turned to speak to him, another man then attacked him from behind.
Afterwards the two thugs ran from the scene.
Muhammad said: “This is a life-changing injury for me. He is a coward to attack me from behind when I wasn’t expecting it.
“I only want justice, but I don’t know if I will get it.”
Police were called, and Muhammad initially went home to Greenhill after speaking to officers.
But he later had to be taken to hospital in severe pain, and his broken cheekbone was diagnosed.
Muhammad said the injury to his cheekbone was very painful and doctors have also said his eyesight may be affected.
Upset Nabeela, 43, said: “People around here know us really well and we have never had to deal with anything like this before.
“Muhammad’s cheekbone was broken in three places and he has got to have an operation.
“His face is a swollen mess.”
She said a description of Muhammad’s suspected attacker has been given to police, and the family hope an arrest can be made.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police confirmed: “Police were called to reports of an altercation between a group of men in Handsworth Road, Sheffield.
“It is believed two men were involved in a dispute. A number of other men became involved.
“A 44-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the incident. Inquiries are ongoing.”
Anyone with information about the attack, at around 5.45pm on Sunday, July 27, is urged to call police on 101.
