Warning over email scam

TAX credit claimants in South Yorkshire are urged to beware of email scams sent by fraudsters.

HM Revenue and Customs claims ‘phishing’ emails have been sent telling customers to renew their claims by July 31 - or their payments may stop.

The emails often promise a rebate and, if taxpayers click on a link, they are taken to a cloned replica of the HMRC website where they are asked to provide card details.

“Anyone who receives an email claiming to be from HMRC should send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk before deleting it permanently,” a spokesman said.
