Police have launched a national appeal on BBC One’s Crimewatch to find a man believed to have attacked and mugged a disabled pensioner who was struggling to walk through Doncaster town centre.

Details of the attack were shown on last night’s edition of the programme and showed CCTV footage of the pensioner, named only as ‘John’, walking with difficulty as he turned on to Park Road.

His attacker - a ‘smoking man’, who police say was watching John’s every move, crept up behind him and thumped him hard, knocking him to the ground.

As John, who has mild cerebral palsy and uses a walking stick, lay helpless on the floor, the man stole his wallet and ran off.

The incident is believed to have occurred at around 1am on Monday, July 20 and anyone with information is asked to the Doncaster incident room on 01302 385568 or 01302 385139
