Since the start of the year there have been over 60 reports of bus shelters being smashed and damaged across the town.

In many cases, the shelters’ windows are being smashed (or kicked out of their frames, if the shelters have perspex ‘shatterproof’ panels) and the cost of the damages so far exceeds £10,000.

No area of Doncaster appears to be particularly targeted and there have been no arrests made.

Inspector Ray Mountford from Doncaster said: “We are currently experiencing a spate of damage to bus shelters across Doncaster. “Smashing and damaging the glass or perspex panels creates an untidy and unsettling environment within the local communities, as well as exposing those members of the public waiting for the bus to the elements.

“While our partners at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive are quick to make the repairs, this senseless vandalism is creating significant and unnecessary expense that takes money away from the improvement of public transport services.

“I remind those individuals engaging in this behaviour that this is a criminal offence and if you are caught you will be prosecuted.

“I would urge the local community to report anyone seen damaging bus shelters to police on 101. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
