A man who died after an attack in a South Yorkshire bar has today been named as 45-year-old dad Nick Bedford.

Father-of-three Mr Bedford – who was married to Celia – was found unconscious after being assaulted in the Blue Room bar in Wellington Street.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 12.50am this morning.

Mr Bedford, who was involved in local football, was rushed to hospital but could not be revived – sparking a murder probe.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder following an assault in Barnsley town centre.

“Officers were called to Wellington Street at around 12.50am today to reports that a 45-year-old man was unconscious following an assault inside the Blue Room bar.

“The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Officers are currently at the scene and a murder investigation has been launched.”
