A man was slashed across the face in a suspected knife attack in Sheffield city centre on Tuesday evening.

Police said the man suffered ‘serious slash wounds’ to his face during an assault in Exchange Gateway, off Fargate, and remains in hospital.

A woman also suffered minor injuries to her face during the incident, which happened shortly before 10pm.

She has since been released from hospital.

Two men, aged 31 and 43, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding and are in police custody.

As part of the investigation, officers cordoned off an area outside the Crucible Theatre as snooker spectators left after the evening quarter-final session.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time.
