Doncaster police have arrested two men armed with a rifle and rounds of ammunition, just days after two shootings took place in the borough.

The men were apprehended by roads policing officers, when they stopped a silver coloured Vauxhall Meriva on Melton Mill Lane at around 2.30pm on Tuesday, January 23.

Following a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a bolt action rifle and ammunition, 15 wraps of cannabis and a quantity of amphetamines, both of which are Class B controlled drugs.

Two men from Doncaster aged 29 and 33 were arrested from the car on suspicion of possession with intent to supply controlled drugs and firearm offences.

They both remain in police custody.

Police have now confirmed that investigating officers do not believe this incident is related to two seperate ‘targeted’ shootings that took place in Mexborough on Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Jackson, from the Doncaster Policing Unit, said: “At this stage we do not believe there is any link between the recovery of this firearm and the incidents in

Mexborough last week. The firearm and drugs will now be forensically examined to establish any links to other crimes.”

The first shooting in Mexborough occurred in Fredrick Street on January 20, when residents reported hearing gunfire.

Three men were subsequently apprehended in Worcestershire in connection with the incident.

The second incident occurred at around 6pm on Thursday when shots were fired through the window of a property in Victoria Road.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
