Two thugs who helped to beat up an innocent man have narrowly avoided custody.

Jake Skinner, 21, and Liam Hall, 17, from Thorne, were among a group of five who attacked Charles Rushton with a golf club. He had to be admitted to hospital for injuries including a black eye and a chipped tooth.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Mr Rushton was outside his home in Millfield Road, Thorne, with his girlfriend last May 31, when he saw Skinner, who he knew.

Andrew Smith, prosecuting, said Skinner shouted out, ‘What are you staring at?’ but Mr Rushton wanted to avoid a confrontation and walked off.

Shortly after, a gang of youths was caught on CCTV throwing stones and breaking a window at Mr Rushton’s home. He was alerted by his grandfather and returned where he was attacked.

Mr Rushton was kicked and punched as he lay on the ground. Since the attack he has suffered from nightmares.

Skinner, of Willow Crescent, and Hall, of Millfield Road, admitted affray.

Judge Ray Singh gave Skinner a 12-month supervision order and Hall a 12-month youth rehabilitation order. Both received a four month curfew.

He told them: “The courts take a very serious view of this type of public disorder.”
