A violent yob who assaulted a couple as they tried to get off a train is being hunted by police.

The thug struck as football fans were travelling home after watching Sheffield United play Barnsley at Bramall Lane.

PC Richard Ward, of British Transport Police, said: “The victim, a Sheffield United fan, was travelling home to Chapeltown with his wife. When the train, which was extremely busy, approached their stop, the couple tried to leave but their exit was blocked by a man who outstretched his arms.

“A scuffle broke out as the couple attempted to move past him, and the victim’s glasses were pulled from his face, fell to the floor and smashed. The offender then attempted to bend back the victim’s hand causing injury, and resulting in the couple missing their stop.

“The couple managed to move away from the offender - who followed them through the train and pulled the victim’s hair. It was thanks to the assistance of other passengers who restrained the offender that the couple were finally able to exit the train at the next stop, Elsecar.”

The assault happened on Saturday.
