BUSINESSES in South Yorkshire are being urged to be on their guard against cyber criminals targeting telephone systems to run up huge bills on premium telephone numbers.
The hacking of telephone systems is known as ‘phreaking’, ‘toll fraud’ or ‘dial through fraud’.
The Business Crime Reduction Centre in Sheffield claims to be aware of companies that have been stung for amounts ranging from £1,000 to £90,000.
The size of the bill depends on the number of calls made, and how long the scam goes undetected.
Director David Ransom said: “On the whole crime across the region has decreased. However, in 2012 fraud saw a sharp rise indicating that criminals are finding new ways to attack businesses. Therefore it is imperative that businesses implement up-to-date security measures to protect themselves from the latest threats.”
