A takeaway shop in Sheffield was found to be to blame for sparking fear on a city estate after mystery markings started appearing on doors - leaving residents fearing they had been targeted by criminals.
Police were called in by Lowedges residents who found markings on their doors.
They found that workers at a takeaway had left the marks to indicate which houses they had visited to deliver leaflets.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “There have been numerous reports over the weekend of marks being drawn on front doors of properties in the Lowedges area.
“This is nothing to worry about. We have spoken to a local takeaway who have been posting leaflets and marking the doors to show where they have been.
“The manager of the company has been strongly advised and apologises.”
