A SHOP worker in Sheffield was hurt trying to stop a shoplifter escape with a bag of stolen goods.

Police said a man entered the Co-operative store on Margetson Crescent, Parson Cross, just before 5pm on Wednesday.

A staff member approached the shoplifter as he tried to leave without paying and received minor injuries as he fled.

One shopper told The Star: “I don’t know how badly she was attacked, but even so it’s frightening, especially as I go in there with my children.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the thief was wearing a light coloured jacket and a baseball cap and appealed for witnesses to contact investigating officers.

A Co-operative Group spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident at our Margetson Crescent store on Wednesday when a staff member was left badly shaken after confronting a shoplifter.

“The police were called and CCTV footage has been given to the police who are investigating. We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.”
