A FEMALE customer chased an armed robber out of a village store after he burst in brandishing a gun.
The raider, whose face was covered by a balaclava, stormed into Treeton News on Front Street, Treeton, Rotherham, and demanded cash.
He also ordered the woman behind the counter to give him cigarettes - and when she gave him a packet of one brand he insisted she change it to another.
Police are today investigating the robbery, which was caught on the shop’s CCTV camera.
Shop owner Jackie McMahon, aged 56, who herself was held up in another armed raid at the store last January, said a woman customer in the shop at the time chased the robber out.
“There was a customer in the shop at the time who ran after the robber when he left the shop. Good on her for trying to help,” she said.
“He ran off towards the graveyard on the opposite side of the road.”
“I wish it had been me working again rather than a member of staff, because she has been left traumatised by this, as you can expect.
“When it happened to me I was calm because I have to be - this is my livelihood, I can’t afford to let them get to me.”
She said she could not believe the armed robber had dared to ask the terrified shop assistant to change the cigarettes she handed over to him.
“She gave him some money and, when he asked for cigarettes, she picked up a packed of Richmond. But he said that he didn’t want those ones and asked for Amber Leaf instead,” she added.
Anyone with information about the incident at 7pm on Friday should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
