South Yorkshire detectives in appeal for help over mystery incident

A man who arrived home covered in blood after a mystery ‘incident’ remains unconscious in hospital.

Craig Howson, aged 33, of Rotherham Road, Cundy Cross, sustained his injuries as he walked home from his sister’s house last Tuesday night.

When he arrived home his face was bleeding and his condition deteriorated without his parents establishing what had happened to him.

Police officers dealing with a collision on the same street, involving a van which struck two bollards before the driver fled, were alerted to Craig’s condition and an ambulance was called.

He is in a critical but stable condition in hospital but has not yet regained consciousness.

Detective Inspector Jade Brice said CCTV footage has been seized from local homes and businesses to try to establish what happened to Craig.

He also wants anyone who saw him that night to come forward.

Officers have made to arrests over the road traffic collision, quizzing a man and woman on suspicion of assault and driving offences, but DI Brice said he has an ‘open mind’ over what happened.

“Officers were dealing with the aftermath of a road traffic collision when they became aware that Craig had sustained some injuries and his condition had deteriorated,” he said.

“We are keeping an open mind as to what happened to him and would like to hear from anyone who has not yet come forward and may have seen him that night.”

He said he had not found anyone with any grudges against Craig, who is single and unemployed, but wanted to hear from anyone who could offer any insight into his life.

n Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
