Homeowners in two Hathersage streets have become the latest to safeguard their properties against burglars by marking up their belongings with SmartWater.

Derbyshire Police offered the kits to residents in Moorland Road and Sheffield Road to mark their valuables with the invisible substance that can only be seen under specialist lights.

Each batch used has its own DNA type code, making it easier for police to find the rightful owners of property should items ever get stolen.

Posters have been put up in the area warning burglars that SmartWater is in use

PCSO Anthony Boswell said: “SmartWater is also a great deterrent to criminals. They know how these kits work and if they are made aware that items and homes are protected, they will think twice about targeting them.”
