A WOMAN was fined £75 and ordered to pay a further £50 in costs after she was caught selling alcohol to an under-age customer in a shop in South Yorkshire.

Mandy Lane, of Nottingham Close, Barnsley, was convicted of serving alcohol to an under-age customer during a hearing at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court.

The 52-year-old has since resigned from her post as manager of a convenience store in Darfield, Barnsley.

PC Craig Sumpter said: “Let this message be clear to all shopkeeper and licensees – South Yorkshire Police will ensure compliance with the law in this particularly important area.

“Licences to sell alcohol bring with them an important responsibility, namely not to sell alcohol to person who is aged under 18.

“Police in Barnsley have worked hard at tackling anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol and we will maintain our vigilance.”

n Anyone with information about under-age drinking and those serving children is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
