A mum was stabbed to death on a Sheffield street as locals watched in horror - by her ex-partner who feared he would lose custody of their two-year-old son.

Erhan Mehmedov, aged 45, told his own mother the night before the killing in Gleadless that he was going to stab Dimitrina Borisova to death.

He hid a kitchen knife in his trousers, and attacked Dimitrina as she waited for his mother to hand over the two-year-old child on Blackstock Road at 12noon on February 21 this year.

Dimitrina, a 46-year-old accountant originally from Bulgaria, died from 17 stab wounds including three to her chest, at least one of which pierced her heart.

Mehmedov, a Turkish national, was arrested at a bus stop and is later said to have told police: “I did it, I will tell you everything.”

Graham Reeds QC, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court: “The defendant started to think he would lose custody of his son to her, and he couldn’t bear the prospect that she would beat him in the court process.
“He decided he was going to do something about it. It was a controlled, deliberate and relentless attack, carried out with an obvious intention to kill her.”

Mr Reeds said Dimitrina moved to the UK in February 2010, and had a son with Mehmedov later the same year.

But in December 2012 she left him because he had become abusive - and left their son in Mehmedov’s care.

Mr Reeds said Dimitrina was often left with bruises and had been threatened with a knife ‘on more than one occasion’.

Mehmedov once twisted her arm so hard it broke, but he prevented her from getting medical treatment, it was claimed.

The day before the attack Dimitrina had been given permission by a court to have overnight custody of their son twice a week.

That night Mehmedov got drunk on whisky, Mr Reeds said, and told his mother he planned to kill Dimitrina when she came to collect the little boy the next day.

On day of the killing Mehmedov went with his mother to hand over the child.

Mr Reeds said Dimitrina was waiting outside the pharmacy on Blackstock Road when Mehmedov - who was not supposed to be at the handover - jumped out and attacked her.

“The picture is of a surprise attack on Dimitrina, deliberately executed using the large knife, and culminating in the defendant purposely stabbing her in the chest and torso, stabbing her chest as she lay motionless on the pavement,” Mr Reeds said.

The attack was seen by several eye-witnesses - including a 10-year-old girl who gave evidence to the jury by videolink.

The youngster said she saw the man with a knife in his belt.

“I couldn’t help looking,” she said.

She said the man fell over before getting up and going after Dimitrina again.

She said: “She got away, she screamed and ran, and the second time he got her. He stabbed her five times and I saw it.”

Mr Reeds said the attack was also witnessed by a 16-year-old, who heard Dimitrina tell Mehmedov, ‘Get off me, I don’t want to talk to you’.

“He replied, ‘I’m coming to get you’,” Mr Reeds said.

Memedov, of Blackstock Road, Gleadless, admits manslaughter but denies murder, claiming he lost his self-control following taunting from Dimitrina.

The trial continues.
