Sheffield man accused of duty evasion

A CRACKDOWN on smuggling has landed a Sheffield man in court over an alleged smuggling scam, in which £2 million worth of duty was not paid on 12 million cigarettes and 465 kilos of hand-rolling tobacco.

Malcolm Sargent, aged 66, of Charnock View Road, Charnock, is charged with cheating the public revenue contrary to common law and is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court next week.

He is one of 10 suspects accused in the apparent scam along with others from High Wycombe, Reading, London, Middlesex, Boston, Beesby, Newbury and Walsall.
