Litter bugs who failed to pay a £75 fixed penalty notice after being caught in the act have been landed with a £488.79 bill.
Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Protection Service prosecuted 24 people.
A council spokesman said: “The city council encourages everyone to use the litter bins provided.
“Our Environmental Protection Officers will approach anyone they see dropping litter. The person will usually be offered the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty of £75. If the fixed penalty is not paid, then the matter will go to court.”
They were all fined £200, with costs of £118.79, a victim surcharge of £20, and a Criminal Court Charge of £150 - amounting to a combined total of £11,730 for all 24 defendants.
